INTERESTING RESEARCH
Elizabeth's tumor was a glioma (type will be determined by the pathology report), and it was located in her left temporal lobe which contains important speech functions. As a result, her surgeon recommended an awake craniotomy using an intra-operative MRI. The work her surgeon and others have done in this field are remarkable. You can read more about the type of surgery Elizabeth had by reading the second section of the entry, "Tumor Resection: Improvements in Preserving Function." Dr. Ian Parney is the skilled surgeon who performed Elizabeth's awake craniotomy.
Another interesting article from the University of Chicago also provides interesting information about an awake craniotomy and why they are so important in these circumstances in the article "Awake Craniotomy: Confronting Brain Surgery with Open Eyes."
This article, published in the journal World Neurosurgery, outlines the work Elizabeth's surgeon, Dr. Ian Parney, has conducted. This article does have images of the surgery as well as MRIs similar to those Elizabeth had.
